There are many hidden features in both macOS and iOS that often go under the radar, either because they don’t get much attention from Apple in marketing materials or they get forgotten after a while.
In our latest YouTube video, we’ve made a second in a series of macOS tips, offering some useful tricks and shortcuts that you might not have known about.
1, Custom Keyboard Commands – You can create custom keyboard commands for specific apps or for all your apps by going to System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts and select App Shortcuts.
From here, click the “+” button to add a new shortcut and a title for it. In our example in the video, we replaced standard paste with a paste and match style, removing formatting for copied content. With this replacement, when we use Command + V keys to paste, it will use paste and match style instead of regular paste.
2, Calculator Spotlight – Instead of opening a calculator app, you can use Spotlight to do quick and easy calculations. Just type Command + Space to bring up the focus and type in the simple problem you need to solve.
3, Use Keychain Access to find the WiFi password – If you forgot the password to the WiFi network, you can use Keychain Access to find out its password. Open the Keychain Access app and then select “System” to see all the saved passwords for the WiFi network you’re connected to. Choose one, click “Show Password”, enter your account credentials and it will be displayed as plain text. You can access all logins and passwords saved in Keychain Access if needed.
4, Hide Menu Bar – A lot of people have hidden their docks for more screen space when the dock is not in use, and you can do the same thing with the menu bar at the top of your Mac. Go to System Preferences -> General and then check “Automatically hide and show menu bar.”
5, Touch Bar Escape Keyboard Command – If you hate the non-physical escape key on the Touch Bar of MacBook Pros, there is a keyboard replacement command supported by most applications.
Use Command + period in place of the escape key to do things like exit a full-screen window.
6, Make volume and brightness adjustments – If you hold down Option + Shift while you use the volume or brightness keys, you can adjust the brightness or volume in smaller increments.
7,Use Command + Tilde to switch between Windows – If you have multiple windows of the same application open, you can quickly switch between them using Command + Tilde. So, for example, if you have a ton of Safari windows open, this keyboard command will let you sort them quickly.
